I opened a thread on the Komen site to protest Egypt's actions. Here's a link to both the Komen site and its forums:

Egypt slams door on Israeli cancer researchers
By JACOB KANTER

Although they were granted all the necessary security clearances, a team of Israeli breast cancer researchers and advocates was denied entry to Egypt earlier this week.

The team had hoped to participate in breast cancer awareness and advocacy programs and workshops organized by the American-based Susan G. Komen For the Cure, but was informed just before departing that Egyptian Health Minister Hatem el-Gebaly had decided they would not be allowed to attend.

"The situation is very serious," said Yossi Levy, spokesman for the Foreign Ministry. "Everything was taken care of, [the team] had the necessary documentation. We still don't know why they weren't allowed in."

Levy also said his office was in discussion with Egypt about clarifying the decision.

In addition to the ministry's efforts, the Anti-Defamation League called on Susan G. Komen For the Cure on Tuesday to help ensure the Israelis' participation in the event.

"We respectfully urge the leadership of Susan G. Komen for the Cure to make clear to Egyptian authorities, including the breast cancer program's patron, First Lady of Egypt Suzanne Mubarak, that this exclusion of Israeli breast cancer researchers and activists is unacceptable," wrote ADL national director Abraham H. Foxman. "This decision must be immediately reversed to enable them to participate in these programs."

However, as of Wednesday afternoon, no progress had been made, and the team remained in Israel.

The week-long event began on Wednesday in Alexandria with an address from the US ambassador to Egypt, Margaret Scobey, among others. The rest of the week will feature a "Race for the Cure" at the Giza Pyramids, and various workshops on breast cancer support.

Dr. Muhammad Shaalan, chairman of the Breast Cancer Foundation of Egypt, praised the event.

"This remarkable, intensive, passionate, unprecedented cooperation between nations is a message of unity, peace and hope to win the battle against breast cancer," Shaalan said in a statement.

A representative from the Israel Cancer Association had not yet heard
of Egypt's actions on Wednesday afternoon.

This was the second time in less than a week that Egypt had prevented Israelis from entering the country for the purpose of attending a conference. Last Friday, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry refused to grant a visa to Yossi Gordon, the head of the Association of Contractors and Builders in Israel.

We hope so. We urge them to come and we will welcome them here in all of our events.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure Pleased to Announce Egyptian Events to Welcome All Advocates, Including those from Israel Statement by Nancy G. Brinker, Founder, Susan G. Komen for the Cure

“Breast cancer advocates from the United States and across the Middle East are meeting in Egypt from October 21-27 for breast cancer awareness events. There have been reports that some of the invited participants would not be allowed to attend these events. Susan G. Komen for the Cure has now received confirmation that all advocates, regardless of their country of origin, are invited to fully participate in events to bring breast cancer to the forefront of public discussion in the Middle East.

After we received the initial report on the situation, we launched a diplomatic effort to ensure they would be able to participate. I am pleased to report that our efforts led to confirmation that all advocates would be welcome to participate in the events.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure remains steadfast in our mission to save lives and end breast cancer forever.”

Hmm,

It seems like this story has been getting a bit more play around the net than I originally knew.

I saw this response from the Komen Foundation on another blog.:
____________________________________________________________________________
This is the letter they sent me back some days ago.

October 21, 2009

I would like to thank you for contacting us about the two Israeli doctors who were told by the Egyptian government that they were not cleared to attend a series of breast cancer events in Egypt this week in which Susan G. Komen for the Cure is involved.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure had invited these professionals to a part of the events – including a symposium and a Race for the Cure around the pyramids – months earlier. We had no knowledge that they would be told by the government, just before the events, not to attend. These actions were not within the control of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

As a non-profit, non-governmental organization whose mission is to end suffering from breast cancer globally, including countries throughout the Middle East, we believe that ending breast cancer requires the efforts of all countries. We are deeply disappointed that all parties are not able to participate at this time. We look forward to the day when everyone will be united in this effort.

In deliberation of the present situation, there were three key factors in our decision to remain in Egypt and continue trying to help the women here who are suffering and dying needlessly of this disease: 1. the timing of the events, which are already underway, 2. the number of partners involved, and 3. the large number of survivors, activists and scientists already in transit to attend. We remain committed to our trip to Israel next week to begin planning similar events.

Since the mid-1990’s, Komen has funded research and programs to enhance education, awareness, screening and treatment around the world. Our Middle East initiatives include funding millions in research and community programs and establishing partnerships in Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and now Egypt. Ending this suffering requires the cooperation, collaboration and best resources that every country can offer.

We remain steadfast in our mission to save lives and end breast cancer forever.

Sincerely,
Nancy G. Brinker

A half-full / dissapointing ending to the story here. This post was published today on the Komen site by the moderator:

Statement regarding Israel's participation:

Unfortunately, although invited, the Israeli delegates did not attend the Egypt events. However, Nancy and other Komen leaders are in Israel for the next several days meeting with grantees, business and government leaders and will see the delegates then. We are in Israel in part to plan a similar set of events to the ones in Egypt.

Hey Margie,

If you go back to the original article, it appears that the Israeli delegation had all of their travel documents in order and that the blackballing came down at the last minute.

Despite the diplomatic push by the Komen foundation and I'm sure others, to get the Egyptian verdict reversed, at that point, the conference had already begun, and by the time the Israeli delegates would have reached the conference in Alexandria, it was too late for them to have any meaningful participation.

The last bit of information by Komen, that their leadership was visiting Israel to meet with the delegates, and propose plans for a similar conference in Israel at some undetermined point in time, the fact is, it obviously won't be a regional conference, and its doubtful that there will be anything like the coverage and participation that the Egyptian conference received.

Personally, I don't think there was any malice behind the Komen actions. That's not what they do, and its a very prominent organization in the fight against breast cancer (check out their donor page, very hefty and public doners. Likewise, the co-participants in the Egyptian conference - US AID, and John Hopkins University, one of the top medical collages in the US). They were blindsided by the actions of the Egyptian government.

You see their forums, and it is exclusively focused on fighting the disease and supporting those who are suffering from both the illness and the side effects of the treatment.

From the way the J-Post article reads, it seems like this is part of the ongoing diplomatic snit by Egypt following the loss of the UNESCO post by its book-burning candidate.

Here is the latest information from the Komen foundation's leaders:

A message from our Founder

As the Founder of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, I want to share this personal letter from me regarding the October 21-27 breast cancer events in Egypt and issues over the attendance of Israeli advocates. There is quite a bit of misinformation circulating, and I hope this letter from me is helpful in clarifying the facts.

First and most emphatically, we agree that this is a situation that never should have happened. There is no room for discrimination in the effort to end breast cancer globally.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure has for many years sponsored, organized or participated in international events aimed at eliminating breast cancer on a global scale. Our international mission trips this past October included very good meetings with First Lady Sarah Netanyahu in Israel, First Lady Suzanne Mubarak in Egypt, Princess Dina and Princess Ghida in Jordan and the Mayor of Jerusalem, Nir Barkat. These leaders want to help end breast cancer globally and that's very encouraging.

Unhappily, on the eve of the start of our Egypt events, we got caught in the crossfire of old sensitivities with the report that some Israeli advocates were initially denied access to our events in Cairo. Sadly, discrimination against Israelis does take place despite the great work that is done there to fight cancer. When we were notified, we launched a diplomatic effort to try and resolve the situation on behalf of our Israeli friends. Those efforts, combined with the efforts of the American Embassy in Cairo, were successful and the Israeli advocates were invited to attend the conference in Cairo.

Sadly, but understandably, the two delegates from Israel did not attend the events in Egypt. But, because of our long history of work in Israel, I had already planned to travel to Israel following the events in Egypt along with a small delegation. While there, we had a warm and productive meeting with the two Israeli advocates, as well as meetings with Israeli government officials, NGOs, advocacy organizations and survivors. A key focus was planning for events in 2010 to highlight cancer awareness, tobacco control and health diplomacy. You should know we already are planning the first Race for the Cure through Jerusalem in 2010. Since our beginning, Susan G. Komen for the Cure has funded $2 million to research and support programs in Israel (in fact, our very first international research grant went to an Israeli institution in 1994). You can read more about our recent trip and our work in Israel below.

Nevertheless, the situation in Egypt never should have happened and we are working to ensure that it doesn't happen again as we move forward in our global efforts.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure is a humanitarian organization, not a political one. For those who work in politically challenging environments, it's always very difficult. But as I said earlier, discrimination should never interfere with scientific efforts to prevent cancer, and we will continue to carry out our global mission irrespective of religion or native country.

As you know, the global cancer pandemic doesn't respect borders and it is indifferent to peoples' nationalities or their politics. It will kill millions of people without respect to religion, race or creed. And as cancer is universally deadly, we believe our response must be equally universal.

I hope this information was helpful in understanding a very difficult situation. We hope you will continue to join us in our effort to end breast cancer forever.

My best,

Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker
Founder, Susan G. Komen for the Cure®

Here is the full press release:

Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Takes World Cancer Message to Israel

Week of Sessions with Israeli Leaders and NGOs Lays Groundwork for First Komen Race for the Cure in Israel in 2010

JERUSALEM, ISRAEL — November 5, 2009 — Susan G. Komen for the Cure® founder Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker and Susan G. Komen for the Cure Global Ambassador Hadassah Lieberman traveled to Israel October 27-30 for a series of meetings with government leaders, grantees, NGOs, partners, advocates and survivors. They reviewed existing programs funded by Komen for the Cure and began planning for future events in Israel highlighting breast cancer, tobacco control and health diplomacy.

This visit to Israel is part of the organization’s extensive global efforts to share knowledge and resources to end breast cancer around the world, and to lay the groundwork for the first Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® in Israel in 2010. Komen, the world’s leading breast cancer organization, has granted more than $2 million in Israel for breast cancer research and outreach programs since the organization was founded by Brinker nearly 27 years ago.

The October visit included meetings with Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat and his wife, Beverly Barkat, to discuss Komen’s investment in breast cancer research and outreach in Israel as well as future collaboration to raise awareness about the disease.

Israel is primed to host a series of events late next year, including the first Israel Race for the Cure. This unique collaboration between government agencies, NGOs, youth movement groups, high school teachers, scientists, doctors and advocates will showcase breast cancer awareness work led by Komen and highlight Brinker’s global leadership in cancer control for the United Nation’s World Health Organization.

The Komen delegation then visited Tishkofet/Life’s Door and met with its founders, Dr. Benjamin and Dvora Corn. Tishkofet is a holistic center for cancer patients, providing services such as support group sessions, yoga classes and art and music therapy. Eighty percent of Tishkofet’s patients are battling breast cancer.

Brinker and Lieberman then traveled to the Knesset to meet with Dr. Rachel Adato, an obstetrician/gynecologist who is a noted leader in women’s health issues and a new member of the Knesset. The group discussed ways in which to raise awareness of breast cancer in Israel and spur public action to fight the disease.

The day concluded with a visit to a candle lighting ceremony commemorating the anniversary of Yitzhak Rabin’s assassination. Brinker and Lieberman visited with Dahlia and Yuval Rabin, the children of Yitzhak Rabin, and with President Peres.

Learn more / View pictures from the trip

October 29 began with a site visit to a Susan G. Komen for the Cure grantee, Beit Natan, in an ultra-Orthodox community in Jerusalem. The delegation met with Chaya Heller, founder of Beit Natan, to discuss the Komen-funded early detection outreach project “Woman to Woman” which targets ultra-Othodox (Haredi) women with life-saving early detection messages and mammography reminders.

Following Beit Natan, the delegation traveled to Abu Ghosh, an Israeli Arab town just six miles west of Jerusalem, to visit a women’s health clinic supported by Hadassah Medical Organization. Here they met with Audrey Shimron, executive director of Hadassah Israel, and Hiyah Rahman, director of the Abu Ghosh Community Center. The delegation was briefed on the cultural barriers and lack of education facing many Arab women in Israel. To address this problem, the Hadassah Medical Organization recently opened a “one-stop shop” for women’s health care in Abu Ghosh.

Following the trip to Abu Ghosh, the delegation met with Sara Netanyahu, wife of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to discuss Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s current work in Israel and potential future plans.

The group then met with Miri Ziv, director general of the Israel Cancer Association (ICA), at the organization’s Tel Aviv headquarters. They were briefed on ICA’s public education and advertising campaigns featuring breast cancer awareness and early detection. Ziv, longtime ICA leader, shared the organization’s growth and impact in leading the country’s cancer education and outreach programs as well as funding leading cancer research in Israel. The leaders discussed collaborating on upcoming breast cancer awareness and tobacco control activities to be planned in Jerusalem in 2010.

The trip concluded with a dinner hosted by US Ambassador James Cunningham and his wife, Leslie, at the Ambassador’s residence. Leaders in the Israeli cancer community were invited to discuss cancer control in the region and discuss Brinker’s work as WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Cancer Control.

Breast cancer foundation launches Israel activities
Jerusalem selected to host Komen Race for the Cure event on October 28 with participants from all over country, worldwide

Published: 07.11.10, 08:16 / Israel Activism

Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the largest volunteer-based international organization to raise awareness for battling breast cancer and support scientific research for the disease's prevention, will be launching the Israel Breast Cancer Collaborative with activities in Israel in October 2010.

This initiative is a continuation of the organization's plan of action to work globally to discover and deliver the cures for breast cancer. Susan G. Komen for the Cure is a unique foundation as it combines the support for scientific research with funding for education, screening and treatment programs on a global scale.

The organization began with a promise between two sisters, Nancy Goodman Brinker and Susan Goodman Komen, when Susan was fighting her battle with breast cancer. Susan’s compassion for others and commitment to making a difference throughout her own ordeal moved her sister, Nancy Goodman Brinker, to promise her sister that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever.

That promise lives on in the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation and is an inspiration to people around the world.

Since this promise 30 years ago, Susan G. Komen for the Cure has invested nearly $1.5 billion US globally in research, education, screening, treatment and awareness programs particularly geared to low income communities where the need for outreach and education are greater.

The organization has invested more than $450 million to support scientific research and an additional $900 million to provide education, screening and treatment programs aimed at early detection and dealing with the disease. The organization has cooperated with more than 50 government and non-governmental organizations in five continents in order to develop solutions and strategies for dealing with the global breast cancer crisis.

During its years of operation the Susan G. Komen for the Cure has developed its unique Races – runs, walks and symbolic marches – coined the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® Series, as main vehicles for both raising awareness while empowering people and giving those who have the disease support and hope. The Komen Race for the Cure Series currently takes place in 141 cities globally.

Key vehicle for raising public awareness

Jerusalem has been selected to host the first Komen Race ever to be held in Israel with participants from all over the country who will be joined by participants from other countries. Participants will include leading public figures involved in raising awareness and education about the importance of early detection of breast cancer.

The Komen races serve as a key vehicle for raising public awareness, and the race in Jerusalem will be opened by internationally renowned fashion designer Dorin Frankfurt, who has agreed to volunteer as honorary race chairperson.

Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer among women. In Israel alone breast cancer constitutes nearly 30% of all cancer cases and is the number one reason for death amongst women in Israel. In the last 25 years the frequency of diagnosis with breast cancer has gradually risen with over 4,000 new cases diagnosed every year hitting women at a younger age than ever up to a short time ago.

Hadassah's researchers in Israel have only recently been able to identify an apparent halt in the rise due to prevention measures and development of advanced techniques of treating breast cancer. The Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization has contributed over $2 million in Israel in the last 16 years to support varying breast cancer research projects as well as women’s outreach programs.

The Municipality of Jerusalem and the Hadassah World Zionist Organization are partnering with Susan G. Komen for the Cure in this coming year’s projects which will take place in October 2010. Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat is the official host of the organizations launches events in Israel.

The 300,000-women strong Hadassah organization which began developing modern health care in pre-state Israel nearly a hundred years ago and has continued to support medicine, education and social welfare has partnered with Komen to increase awareness and treatment of breast cancer.

The work of the Hadassah hospitals in Jerusalem serves as an everyday testimony to the wide attention and focuses on issues of women health and breast cancer treatment.

REGISTER ONLINE TO BE THERE (OR PARTICIPATE VIRTUALLY) FOR HISTORIC FIRST
SUSAN G. KOMEN ISRAEL RACE FOR THE CURE®

In Partnership with Hadassah®, Mayor Barkat, World’s Largest Series of 5k Runs/Fitness Walks Celebrating Breast Cancer Survivors, Supporters Comes to Israel for First Time

DALLAS – June 2, 2010 – Online registration is now open for those who wish to go in person or participate virtually in the historic first Susan G. Komen Israel Race for the Cure® in Jerusalem Oct. 28. Visit www.komen.org/israel to register now.

This historic first Israel Race for the Cure will be held around the walls of Old Jerusalem with Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat as host and in partnership with Hadassah®, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month, held every October.

The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® Series of more than 140 Races is the world’s largest series of 5k runs/fitness walks and among the most successful education and fundraising events for breast cancer ever created. The Race for the Cure started 28 years ago in Dallas, Texas to celebrate breast cancer survivors and supporters, and honor those who have died from the disease at a time when people did not say the words “breast cancer” aloud. Today, more than 1.6 million people participate in Races across North America, Europe, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.

The first Israel Race for the Cure is the centerpiece of a week of activities that Susan G. Komen for the Cure is sponsoring in Israel, Oct. 25-29, in a mission trip to launch the Israel Breast Cancer Collaborative. Komen is also sponsoring an invitation-only Think Tank of global scientists to explore vital breast cancer issues.

“Jerusalem is a site of great historic significance to people of all faiths. It will be very meaningful to see people of all religions and nationalities racing as one toward a common goal of ending suffering from breast cancer while also celebrating those who are living with and conquering this disease whether they join us in person or in spirit from anywhere in the world,” said Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker, founder and CEO of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Travel packages and activities are available at www.komen.org/israel for those who wish to travel to Israel that week as part of a special delegation. Anyone is welcome to register for the Race and to make personal travel arrangements. Delegates to the larger mission trip will investigate breast cancer issues and solutions in sessions with local officials and non-governmental organizations and participate in the Race and other activities.

Those who can’t travel to Israel can register as a VIP – Virtual Israel Participant. VIPs receive their own Israel Race website page to personalize with photos and stories to raise awareness and funds and to honor a breast cancer survivor. VIPs also can form virtual Race teams, complete with T-shirts and special Race bibs marking this historic event.

“The Race for the Cure is a powerful way for schools, churches, synagogues and local organizations to participate by walking, running and forming Race teams to support breast cancer survivors, their families and friends in Israel, and around the world, in a fun and meaningful way,” said Stephanie Siegel, a breast cancer survivor who is co-chair of the Israel delegation trip and board member of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Advocacy Alliance, the c4 sister organization to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Somewhere in the world, a woman dies of breast cancer every 68 seconds. Breast cancer is the most common form of women’s cancers in Israel, with 4,000 women and men diagnosed annually. Since 1982, Komen has granted nearly $2 million to organizations in Israel for research and community support.

The Israel Breast Cancer Collaborative continues Komen’s long-standing partnerships in Israel and around the world with organizations such as the Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, while opening doors to new collaborations with organizations in Israel. This mission trip is Komen’s first to Israel but is similar to trips Komen has sponsored in recent years to the Middle East, Europe and Africa. Komen is partnering with Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, Sharsheret, and with global partners and cancer leaders, Breakthrough Breast Cancer in the United Kingdom and the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

About Susan G. Komen for the Cure®

Israel Race for The Cure
